America is a land full of treasures. From the highest tops of the Rocky Mountains to the white sandy beaches of the gulf coast. However our people are our greatest treasure, and our Military and Service Members are the ones who keep it that way.
Through their service, Veterans have developed unique care requirements during their final months of life, and nearly 25% of all deaths in the United States each year are Veterans. While more than 1,800 Veterans die each day, only 33% of these national heroes receive the benefits that they fought for and deserve. This is an unacceptable statistic at our Hospice, and that is why we strive each day to make sure that more Veterans receive care when it matters most.
The superior training that men and women receive in our military promotes a culture of stoicism. Fear and pain can often be seen as a sign of weakness. This can result in difficulties when facing end-of-life realities. For example, many Veterans struggle to share their thoughts with other people. This can result in depression, guilt and isolation. Many Veterans experience difficulty concentrating, have anxieties and possibly even have outbursts of anger. These struggles are a result of both training and either combat or non-combat service.
Knowing that these struggles exist is important to meeting the needs of Veterans at the end of life. That is why each of our employees go through yearly Veteran-specific training focused on how to meet the needs of these men and women.
As experts in Veteran care, we have developed the exclusive Veterans Initiative Program (VIP) to provide a special level of care to the communities we serve. Our program focuses on helping Vets and families understand how to quickly navigate the Veteran’s Benefit process. Through VIP we help each Veteran patient with the following benefits and more:
- Specialized Veteran Plan of Care
- Social Security Assistance
- Official Veteran Headstones
- Veteran’s Cemetery and Burial Assistance
- Burial Flags
- Medallion Benefit
- Survivor’s Pension
- Military Records
- Presidential Memorial Certificate
- Veterans Service Organizations Assistance
- Additional Benefits needed Regarding each Veteran’s Individual Situation
Our Goal for Each Veteran Is:
Value and respect for our Veterans coinciding with their hospice benefits
Educate families on all available avenues of support and service organizations
Train hospice health care staff on era-specific needs of our Veterans
Eliminate obstacles that currently deter families from earned services and benefits
Respond around the clock to medical, social, and spiritual needs of our Veterans
Advocate for our Veterans and their families with our own Veteran staff and volunteer team
No Veteran dies alone
